Pilling (밀림) Is a Formulation Problem, Not User Error
The Korean skincare industry has a specific word for the moment your moisturizer rolls into grey gummy pellets on your face: 밀림 (mil-lim). The literal translation is “being pushed away.” Which is, if you think about it, exactly the more honest framing. The product is not absorbing. It is leaving.
Western beauty content tends to place the blame immediately on the person holding the bottle. You applied too much. You layered too fast. You used the wrong order. You — somehow — failed at rubbing cream onto your face. My friend Jiyeon, who works in product development at a mid-tier Seoul brand and lives in Mapo-gu, has a more useful framework: “If a product pills consistently, across different people, in different climates, the formula is wrong. That’s not a consumer education issue. That’s a bench problem.”
She said that to me over lunch about four years ago and I have not been able to shake it. Because the pilling (밀림, mil-lim) conversation in English-language beauty is almost entirely backwards.
What Pilling Actually Is
Before we get into fault-finding, the mechanism is worth understanding precisely. Pilling happens when the polymers in a formula — most commonly carbomer, polyacrylate crosspolymer, or certain cellulose derivatives — do not fully absorb before they encounter another product or physical friction. Instead of integrating into the skin barrier, they dry into a tacky film. When you apply the next layer, or move your fingers, that film shears off in small rolls.
This is a polymer behavior issue. It is physics and chemistry. Skin type plays a secondary role at most — though more on that nuance below.
The reason this matters for K-beauty specifically is that Korean formulation culture has leaned heavily on rheology modifiers (the technical category that includes most pilling-prone polymers) because consumers there have, for decades, prioritized certain textures: gels that feel weightless, toners that have a faint slip, essences that spread like water but don’t run. Achieving those textures without any film-forming agent is difficult. So formulators use them, and some do it more carefully than others.
Why the “User Error” Myth Persists
The layering order narrative
There is a real grain of truth here, which is part of why the myth sticks. Layering a silicone-heavy product over a water-based polymer film will, in fact, increase pilling risk. Silicones create a barrier; if the water-based product underneath hasn’t absorbed, you’ve sealed it out and it has nowhere to go but off your face in grey crumbles.
But the solution to that interaction is not to tell people they layered wrong. The solution — from a brand perspective — is to formulate products that play reasonably well with the adjacent categories most consumers will logically pair them with.
When I worked briefly as a beauty editor in Seoul, I watched a very senior formulator at a brand I won’t name sit down with a printout of one-star reviews, nearly all of which described pilling. His response was to draft FAQ copy explaining correct application technique. The formula did not change. The FAQ did not help. The reviews kept coming.
The “you’re using too much” deflection
This one is particularly convenient for brands because it is occasionally true. Some very rich emollients will pill if you use a quantity that the skin simply cannot accept. Fair enough. But if two pumps of a serum pills on a freshly cleansed, dry face with no other products involved, the quantity is not your problem.
Jiyeon’s rule of thumb, which I’ve adopted: if a product pills in a patch test on clean skin, return it. If it only pills when layered, you have a compatibility issue worth diagnosing. Those are different problems with different solutions.

The Formulation Variables That Actually Drive Pilling
Polymer type and concentration
Carbomer is the most common offender, not because it is bad but because it is cheap and extremely effective at building gel viscosity. At low concentrations, well-neutralized, it absorbs reasonably well. At higher concentrations, or poorly neutralized, it sits. Polyacrylate crosspolymers (you will see these listed as Polyacrylate Crosspolymer-6, -11, etc.) have become popular in Korean gel-creams precisely because they can deliver a bouncy, elastic texture — but they are notably prone to pilling when the rest of the formula isn’t balanced around their behavior.
Hyaluronic acid (히알루론산, hi-al-lu-ron-san) at high molecular weights can also contribute, because high-MW HA sits on the surface rather than penetrating. It forms a film. That film can pill.
Dry-down speed
A formula that dries too fast traps polymers at the surface before skin can absorb them. Alcohol, certain volatile silicones, and some humectants accelerate dry-down. A thoughtful formulator balances dry-down speed against polymer load. A less thoughtful formulator uses alcohol to make the texture feel elegant in the bottle without considering what happens at sixty seconds post-application.
pH mismatch between layers
Less commonly discussed but real: when two products have significantly different pH levels, the upper layer can cause the lower layer’s polymers to destabilize. This is relatively rare in a standard routine but more likely if you are using a low-pH exfoliant in the same sequence as a high-pH cleansing milk or certain balm-type moisturizers.
When Skin Type Is Actually Relevant
I do not want to overstate the “it’s never your fault” position, because there are genuine skin-type interactions worth knowing.
People with oily skin sometimes produce enough sebum during the day that a morning sunscreen or second moisturizer will encounter that sebum and pill. That is not a formulation failure in the same sense — it’s a timing and selection issue. Waiting a full minute between steps, or choosing lighter textures for a second daytime layer, genuinely helps here.
Dry skin that is very compromised can pill differently: the outer surface is rough and uneven, so products skip over high points and accumulate in low points, creating uneven dry-down that mimics pilling. In this case, a light exfoliation cycle and barrier repair work is the actual intervention — not switching serums.
But these are edge cases. Most pilling complaints come from normal-to-combination skin using products in reasonable quantities. That is formulation territory, full stop.
How to Actually Diagnose Your Pilling Problem
Before you overhaul your routine, run this sequence:
First, test products in isolation. Apply one product on clean skin, wait two minutes, check for pilling. If it pills alone, the formula is the problem. If it doesn’t, add one product at a time and note where the combination breaks.
Second, check your wait times honestly. “I wait for it to absorb” and “I actually wait ninety seconds by a clock” are different things. The ninety-second rule is not a myth — polymers need time. But if a product still pills after a genuine ninety seconds, stop adjusting your behavior and evaluate the product.
Third, look at your SPF. Sunscreen is the single most pilling-prone category in a routine because chemical UV filters are often polymer-heavy and they are the last layer, applied over everything else. If your pilling only appears after sunscreen, that is the compatibility boundary to investigate.
What I Keep on My Counter
These are formulas I have tested specifically for pilling behavior, across different base routines. None of them have given me trouble, and more relevantly, none of them gave my colleague Jiyeon trouble when she ran her own independent tests.
Anua Heartleaf 77% Soothing Toner (around $18–22 USD depending on retailer) A near-water consistency with minimal polymer load. It does not build a film. I have never seen it pill under anything, including heavy sunscreens.
Beauty of Joseon Glow Serum: Propolis + Niacinamide (around $16) One of the few affordable niacinamide serums I’ve encountered with a dry-down that doesn’t feel like it’s racing you. Layers cleanly under both gel-cream and emulsion finishes.
Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence (around $20–25) Mucin is an interesting polymer — it behaves differently from synthetic carbomers and tends to play well with other layers. This one has a near-flawless pilling record in my experience across three years of recommending it to people with layering problems.
Dr. Jart+ Cicapair Tiger Grass Calming Serum (around $52) On the pricier end here, but relevant because centella-heavy formulas often use polymer systems that pill badly, and this one specifically does not. Worth understanding why: Dr. Jart+ has historically invested in rheology R&D at a level that smaller indie brands often cannot afford.
Purito Seoul Daily Go-To Sunscreen SPF 50+ (around $16) For the category most likely to be your pilling culprit, this is the one I return to. Lightweight, lower polymer concentration than most chemical SPFs, and genuinely finish-agnostic over most base moisturizers.
밀림 is not a personal failure. It is a product telling you something about its own construction. Learn to hear it that way, and your routine troubleshooting gets considerably less self-blaming and considerably more useful.
